New Jerseyans for a Death Penalty Moratorium

An organization seeking a moratorium on the use of the death penalty in New Jersey

Mission Statement

The goal of New Jerseyans for a Death Penalty Moratorium (NJDPM) is to win public and political support for an immediate suspension of all executions in the state of New Jersey for a minimum of two years.   A moratorium  is needed to allow legislators and citizens a chance to address the issues of deterrence, inequities, and cost in the imposition of the death penalty.  NJDPM calls for the creation of a legislative commission to study the issue of the death penalty and acceptable alternatives.

Statements Issued in Support of the Moratorium

  • The National Council of Catholic Bishops has sent a letter to President Clinton urging him to support a moratorium.
  • The NJ Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy has issued a statement in support of the moratorium bill.
  • Pax Christi New Jersey has issued a statement in support of the moratorium bill.

Notes From the Last Meeting

Our last meeting was inspirational.  More than 25 members came to show support and offer help.  The momentum from the Illinois Govenor's decision to impose a moratorium on executions in that state cannot be underestimated.  President Clinton is now looking into the possibility of a moratorium on federal use of the death penalty.

The Moratorium Bill

Assembly bill # A1853 has been introduced by Assemblyman Alfred Steele (D) in NJ.  This  death penalty moratorium bill seeks to halt executions for a two year period while a committee appointed by the Governor studies the issue.  We have been told the bill will be heard in early March.  We must act now to insure that the judiciary committee votes to support this bill.  We only have a  few weeks to accomplish a great deal!
